Grades 3-5

Grade 3

Our SRS 3rd Grade emphasizes teamwork and collaboration across the various subjects.  Students work cooperatively and productively in small groups while building stronger friendships and learning team-working skills.  Their speaking and performance skills are nurtured through the many different tasks and events that occur throughout the year, including a 3rd Grade-led Christmas Nativity Show, a recorder concert, and announcement prayer leaders.  Throughout the curriculum, the students are taught to become more organized and logical in their thought processes, aiding in their problem-solving and analytical skills. The students use this knowledge to learn multiplication facts; read a variety of genres; write narratives, information books, and persuasive speeches; and increase overall fluency and comprehension.  All of these skills prepare the students for their first year of ACT Aspire Test during the Spring trimester.

Grade 4

In 4th Grade, students are active in learning about community and the world around them.  They experience many different events and projects that touch upon the different states and time periods of the United States.  For example, the students plan and act out the Alaskan Iditarod in Saint Raymond’s very own IKidaRod. They also take a field trip to The Grove in Glenview where they get to live out activities from the 1800s.  During 4th Grade, students are also supported in fostering independence by beginning to switch classes for both science and social studies. With STEM-based and other hands-on projects and experiments, students have a highly interactive role within their learning.  Students that need a challenge are provided with the opportunity to join accelerated reading and/or math. 4th Grade is also the year where students can choose to join the band program.

Grade 5

Saint Raymond’s 5th Grade curriculum is designed to prepare students for Junior High by encouraging more independence, responsibility, and in-depth thinking.  Students continue to switch classes for Social Studies and Science, and accelerated reading and math programs are offered. Technology is used extensively to research across content areas, and there is a strong emphasis on developing and using good writing skills in all core subject areas.  Our Fifth Grade students are provided with multiple opportunities to practice their leadership skills, including activities like “Reading Buddies” where the students choose stories to read aloud to and plan activities for our younger Kindergarten students. Students can also choose to be trained for altar serving that occurs during both school and parish Masses.
